Description

I've been wanting to draw this for a long time but it's really hard to draw four people in the same picture -___-

The British Special Air Service (SAS) made its debut in the North African deserts in 1941 and has conducted operations throughout the war in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It has also worked closely with other units such as the Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). [link]

During the course of WWII the SAS also had within its ranks French and Belgian regiments. The French joined up in Africa while Belgian troops formed later but participated in D-Day. A Greek regiment, The Sacred Band, was planned to be added, but in 1943 the SAS commander was captured and the plans never went ahead. The Sacred Band continued to work closely with the SAS and other British special forces in the Mediterranean.

After the war the SAS was disbanded, but later on units of the four nations were organized and they all still hold similar unit badges and the motto: Who Dares Wins. All four units are more or less still active today.

The SAS has then become a widely renown special forces unit and has served as a model for other special forces. Australia, New Zealand, Rhodesia (disbanded 1980), and Canada (disbanded 1949) have formed SAS regiments.

I've heard from somewhere there was a proposal to form a SAS unit in the United States but the Americans dropped it. Later on in the 1970's, the United States formed a special force unit based on the SAS for counter-terrorism. That unit is called Delta Force.
